CASE STUDY: SOBR

SOBR is a groundbreaking Web3 Sobriety Maintenance Platform designed to support individuals in managing and incentivizing their sobriety journey. Launched during EthOnline 2022, the project leverages decentralized technologies to provide a unique, engaging, and supportive environment for users striving to maintain their sobriety. With a mission to offer tangible rewards and community recognition for sobriety milestones, SOBR aims to transform the recovery experience by integrating modern Web3 capabilities into a comprehensive sobriety support system.

THE
CHALLENGE

In 2019, approximately 19.3 million adults in the United States had a Substance Use Disorder, representing 7.7 percent of the adult population. Young adults aged 18 to 25, who are also the most prolific users of digital technology, are particularly affected, with drug use rates peaking at 39 percent in this demographic. While traditional sobriety applications offer valuable support, there is a significant opportunity to enhance user engagement and incentivization through gamification and tangible rewards—areas where existing platforms often fall short.

THE SOLUTION

SOBR addresses these gaps by introducing a Web3-based platform that not only supports users in their sobriety but also rewards their progress. Using the Superfluid protocol, SOBR streams tokens to users’ wallets for every hour they remain drug and/or alcohol-free, with verification by a sponsor before tokens are released. These tokens can then be used to purchase sobriety-related merchandise, such as literature, apparel, and NFTs, or to gain access to resources like conference tickets and online therapy subscriptions. Additionally, users earn unique NFTs and POAPs (Proof of Attendance Protocols) for attending meetings and events, as well as for achieving sobriety milestones at intervals such as 30, 60, 90 days, 6 months, and 1 year.

THE TECHNOLOGY

SOBR integrates a range of decentralized technologies to create a secure and dynamic platform. Superfluid is utilized for token streaming, ensuring real-time rewards for users. ENS (Ethereum Name Service) provides wallet naming and avatars, enhancing user identity and interaction within the platform. EPNS (Ethereum Push Notification Service) is employed for dApp notifications, keeping users informed about their progress and platform updates. Data storage is managed through Tableland or Ceramic, offering decentralized and secure options for managing user data. XMTP is used for dApp messaging, facilitating communication between users and their sponsors. The platform is built on Polygon, Optimism, or SKALE as the base chain, selected for their scalability and low transaction costs.
